The Melissa City Council recently presented a certificate of appreciation to the Melissa High Cardinals’ trainer squad after they sprung into action at a recent football game.
Their quick action, under the direction of Dr. Andrew Parker and head trainer Jose Mendez, saved the life of referee Dennis Bennett. Paramedics from Melissa’s Fire Department also sprung into action, making it a true Melissa miracle.
The incident occurred near the end of the Melissa-Celina football game on Oct. 18 at Cardinal Stadium. Bennett, 69, collapsed on the field near the north-end goal line as the Bobcats were driving for a late go-ahead score.
Parker and Mendez, who were the first two to arrive on the scene, knew right away the stricken Bennett was facing a serious cardiac episode. Thanks to their quick action, Bennett was revived and was able to make it home to recover at his home in Parker, Texas, with wife Sharon.
“Dr. Parker and Jose did a great job,” Bennett said after the fact. “If it wasn’t for them, it would have been over.”
