Celina’s Bobcats got three runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-6 win over Melissa on April 2 at the Melissa Sports Facility. The Cards had tied it, 6-6, in the bottom of the seventh on Sean Turnage’s fielder’s choice bunt to score Jayton Cepica from third base. Melissa outhit the Bobcats, 11-9, but committed four errors.

The result threw the District 11-4A race into a three-way tie for second place, with Celina, Sanger and Aubrey all knotted at 3-2 - one game back of first-place Melissa.

Cepica went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cards, including a triple and a double, while Trevor Brooks posted a 2-for-4 night with a pair of doubles. Melissa starter Hayden Schafer pitched four innings, permitting three hits and three unearned runs with a strikeout and a walk. Grayson Hurst worked 3.2 frames, allowing five hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts and three walks. Sam Crain came on for Celina’s final out in the eighth, a grounder back to the pitcher.

Gehrig Griffis swung the big bat for the Bobcats, going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double for 3 RBI. DJ Dell’Anno went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, including the eighth-inning double that gave Celina an 8-6 lead. Bobcat starter Zane Barnett permitted 10 hits and five earned runs over 6.1 innings while striking out six and walking two. Colby Neidhart worked the final 1.2, giving up one hit and striking out one.
