The Melissa Cardinals claimed their second-straight district track and field championship, April 3-4, at the 11-4A meet at Aubrey. The Cards totaled 192 points, outdistancing second-place rival Celina by 50 points. With its victory, Melissa qualified 22 athletes in 12 events for the area meet slated for April 17 at the Jesse Owens Complex in Dallas.

The top-four finishes in each event at district advance to the area meet.

Cardinal gold medal performances were plentiful at Aubrey, including:

-Kennedy Lewis in the 100-meter dash, in school-record time

-Lewis in the 200-meter dash

-4X100 relay of Carlos Branch, Antonio Robinson, Braylon Brown and Ja’Bray Young

-4X200 relay of Robinson, Lewis, Chanse Holiday and Young

-Judson Greer in both the 3,200 and 1,600 meters

-Caleb Kroese in shot put

-Branch in long jump

In the 3,200, Melissa posted a 1-2-3 sweep with school-record holder Greer, Lucas Tauch and Jackson Scribner taking all three medals, respectively. Said Cards head coach Travis Roberson, “In what I believe may have the most selfless thing I’ve ever seen a high school runner do, Judson helped ‘coach’ his fellow runners around the track for eight laps, looking over his shoulder the entire time, getting them to stay on his pace.”

In the high jump, the Cards area-qualified Ryan Johnson, Trevon Cook and Tavion Cook with second-, third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively. Ja’Bray Young also took silver in the 100-meter dash. In the triple jump, two athletes qualified for area: Jaylynn Halliburton-Jones, silver, and Antjuan Turner, bronze. Halliburton-Jones won silver in the 400-meter dash as well. In the 4X400 relay, Trevon Cook, Jones, Holiday and Matt Hahn ran a season-best time to take the bronze.
