Melissa struck early in downing the Sanger Indians, 5-0, in District 11-4A action on Friday at Sanger.
Cardinal starter Sam Crain struck out 10 and walked three while allowing four hits in 6.2 innings of work. Reliever Kayden Benedetto notched the final out.
Trevor Brooks led Melissa hitters with a 2-for-4 turn at the plate, including a 2-RBI double in the second inning.
Three Sanger pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and three walks while permitting six hits. The Indians’ defense coughed up three errors.
The win improved Melissa’s district mark to 2-0 while the Indians fell to 1-1.
An infield single by Melissa’s Grayson Hurst opened the game and, next up, Tyler Womack was hit by a pitch. Then, with two outs, Jayton Cepica reached base on an error which scored Hurst from third. Isaiah Segovia followed with an RBI-single to the left side, sending Womack home for a 2-0 lead.
In Melissa’s second, Hayden Schafer led off with a single to center field and, two outs later, Womack singled to left. Brooks then slapped his two-bagger to left, scoring both runners for a 4-0 advantage. Next batter Coy DeFury got aboard on an error, which plated courtesy-runner Kyle Leonard – the Cards’ final run.
