While Anna’s Lady Coyotes didn’t finish the 2019 basketball season where they’d hoped, plenty of these athletes were deservedly recognized for District 11-4A superlatives and honors, and made Academic All-District as well. Leading the way was junior forward Bre Traylor, who was named the district’s Co-Defensive MVP. All-District honors went to a pair of Lady Coyote guards, senior Skyla Mackey and junior Marianna Bert, while senior post player Hannah Howell was named to the district’s All Defensive Team. Junior forward Lexi Stewart, junior guard Kaycee Redwine and sophomore forward Qua Fisher received Honorable Mention recognition.
First-year Anna head coach Justin Baldia commented recently on his selectees.
“Bre’s length and athleticism really allowed our press to be successful. She led our team in steals and rebounding. When she’s on the court, our defense has a particular edge that allows us to fly around the court.
“Marianna is a basketball junkie that understands and sees the game beyond your average high schooler. She makes our offense run and makes all of her teammates better when she’s on the court. … We asked Skyla to bring the ball up the court and run the offense for 32 minutes every night. She was tasked with the most important job - protect the ball and get us into the front court- and she delivered. She handled the ball, scored and played great defense.
“Hannah is such a cerebral player. She knows where to be, how to get there, and what to do when she’s there. While undersized in the post, she was able to outplay her opponents because of her innate ability to think ahead.
“Few players hustle as hard as Kaycee does. Every possession meant something to her when she was on the court. She was our team’s motor. Lexi is a tough matchup on either end of the court. She played [small forward, power forward and post] for us at various times. She can get to the rim and has a solid jumper. Qua’s athleticism mixed with her natural feel for the game allow her to be as successful as she wants to be every game. A tough defender and rebounder coupled with her ability to get to the rim made her top priority for other teams to stop.”
Academic All-District awards went to Mackey, Howell, Bert, Redwine, Fisher, Stewart, senior guard Alondra Sostre, junior forward Shataelyn King and junior guard Shelby Dombrowski.
Anna finished the 2019 district campaign in fifth place, one spot out of the playoffs, but with seven of the above 10 players back next season, the Lady Coyotes future looks promising indeed.
