ANNA – Anna powered past Bonham’s Lady Warriors, 4-1, on Friday at Coyotes Stadium as a cold wind howled out of the northwest. Kaitlynn Perry led the Lady Coyotes’ charge with three goals and Anna’s defense kept Bonham in check for the most part. Freshman Lady Coyotes goalkeeper Payton Wickliffe logged three saves.

With the win, the Lady Coyotes’ district record improved to 1-1-1. First-year Anna head coach Marlon Madrigal called this first district win “bittersweet” — but not because it came against his former team. “No, it’s because we didn’t play very good,” he laughed. “I don’t know if it’s me, but I expect a way better effort than what we did. It is what it is. … That [Gainesville] goal should not have happened. We were not communicating. I challenged them at halftime to communicate.”

As for Perry’s second hat-trick in a week, Madrigal said, “She’s an amazing goal-scorer. You give her enough chances, she’s going to get them in.”

Perry struck first less than 10 minutes into the match with left-to-right shot past the goalkeeper. Twenty minutes before the break, Abi Cisneros’ 20-yard straight-on shot was caught between the Bonham goalkeeper’s ankles. Then with 14:50 left in the half, Lady Coyote Kaitlyn Long sent a shot high over the crossbar. Two minutes later, her straight-on attempt was nabbed by the goalie.

With three minutes remaining before the intermission, the Lady Warriors evened the score at 1-1 with a right-to-left goal in traffic from about 10 yards out. Anna regained the momentum with 27 seconds left in the half when Schlicht booted a 45-yard free kick that rolled past Bonham’s goalkeeper and, as she chased after it to keep it from going in, Perry slapped it home on the left side for a 2-1 Anna lead.

Early in the second half, Long found net with a close-range, straight-on shot and the Lady Coyotes advantage went to 3-1. Perry saved her best for last, deftly dribbling around a defender then passing a sharp-angled shot, left-to-right, into the goal with 1:06 remaining.
