The local high school tennis teams posted fine outings at the Pottsboro Invitational tournament, Feb. 14-15, at the Anna Sports Complex.


Rowdy Lairson of Anna took first place in Boys Singles, prevailing over teammate Jesus Garrido in the finals, 6-1, 6-0. Enroute to the finals, Lairson had a first-round bye then blanked Wolfe City and Ponder netters, 8-0 each. Garrido had a first-round bye as well, earning his finals meeting with Lairson by topping Zack Butterfield of Melissa, 8-4, and taking an 8-7 tiebreaker over Whitesboro.


In Boys Doubles, John Lewis and Jake Fowler of Melissa claimed the title, defeating teammates Dawson Mercer and Sam Whitten, 8-2, in the finals. After a first-round bye, Lewis and Fowler downed Wolfe City and Ponder pairs, 8-0, 8-1, respectively, to reach the finals. Mercer and Whitten topped Wolfe City, 8-0, Farmersville, 8-3, and Van Alstyne, 8-6, before the title match.


In Mixed Doubles, Megan Carr and Brandon Shipes of Melissa took first place, defeating Whitesboro in finals. Along the way, Carr and Shipes nabbed a quarterfinal win over Bow Gates and Lily Engdahl of Anna and a semifinal final win over Anna’s Simon Geren and Olivia Simmons. Geren and Simmons finished third, downing a Ponder team, 8-4.


Mary Beth Geren and Angel Dube of Anna claimed second place in Girls Doubles, dropping an 8-7 tiebreaker decision to Ponder in the finals. Geren and Dube topped teams from Pilot Point, Melissa and Wolfe City to reach the finals.


In Girls Singles, Anna’s Macy Davis claimed third place with wins over Pilot Point and Melissa, and an 8-3 loss to three-time state-qualifier Juliann Kelley of Whitewright. In her third-place match, Davis got by teammate Andrea Alvarez, 8-6.


Anna’s Spencer May and Mason Massingill won Boys Doubles Consolation, downing Farmersville, 8-1, in the finals. After falling to a Farmersville pair, 8-2, in the first round, May and Massingill bounced back with consecutive wins over Wolfe City entrants, 8-1, 8-0.


Melissa’s squad is led by head coach Brad Crawford while Anna has head coach Vince Sharp at the helm.
