Melissa’s Lady Cardinals (8-0) rolled to a 6-1 road win over Class 5A Sherman in non-district soccer action on Friday as Briley Bowen posted a hat-trick. Bowen punched in Melissa’s first goal three minutes into the match off a rebound from a shot by Lucy Hurst. Near the midpoint of the first half, Sherman evened things at 1-1 on a free kick goal. “The ball bounced awkwardly in front of [goalkeeper] Brittany Morgan,” Lady Cards head coach Manuel Avila said, “and the Lady Cats were the first to jump on the rebound,” Avila noted that the goal was the first allowed by Melissa this season, a period encompassing over 650 minutes of play.
Before the half ended, the Lady Cards had answered back with three goals. First, Bowen booted home her second score, with a Hurst assist — a shot that got past Sherman’s diving goalie. Hurst then took a pass from Anna Blankenship and moved past Lady Cat defenders for another goal. Reagan Eichel followed with a monster free-kick goal from 50 yards out and the Lady Cards held a 4-1 edge at the break.
In the second half, Hurst fired a shot just under the crossbar for Melissa’s fifth goal and Bowen added her third goal of the night on a header off a cross pass from Hurst.
On the boys’ side, head coach Kelley Pitzer and the Cards scrapped to a 1-1 tie with Sherman that same evening with Octavio Barbosa booting home Melissa’s lone goal. Winston Chawira and Hunter Tallichet split time at goalkeeper for the Cards (1-3-4), with Chawira working the first half.
