In District 11-4A basketball action on Friday, Melissa handled the Sanger Indians, 55-43, at home as four Cardinals scored in double figures. Guard Matt Holloway led the way for Melissa with 17 points, followed by guard Ezra Monroe with 13, forward Ricky Morning with 11 and guard Kenneth Castleberry Jr. with 10. For third-place Sanger, Hank Lemons logged a team-high 12 points and Jordan Williams chipped in 11.


Melissa led, 24-20, at halftime then surged to a 36-26 advantage after three quarters.


The victory keeps head coach Eric Benton and the Cards (6-1) within a game of first-place Celina with three district matchups left — including a Melissa-Celina district-finale showdown on Feb. 12.
