At the Anna Sports Complex on Friday, high school spring tennis got underway as Melissa and Anna’s netters went up against players from seven other schools.


Leading the way for Melissa were Sarah Keaton and Sierra Thomas, who claimed the Girls Doubles B title, topping Krum in the finals. In Mixed Doubles B, Cardinals Wilson Gustaveson and Reese Maddock placed third, while Mackenzie Wilke was a Consolation winner in Girls Singles B. In Boys Singles B, A.J. Gonzales nabbed a Consolation medal for Melissa as well.


“This was our first tournament of the spring season and we’re off to a great start,” Cardinals head coach Brad Crawford said. “I was super proud of our kids for their effort. It was really cold in the morning but the weather warmed up by noon and the kids played great. I’m looking for strong performances from our team this spring as we head toward our district tournament, April 1st and 2nd.”


For Anna, Mary Beth Geren and Angel Dube took third place in Girls Doubles A, downing Melanye Simmons and Morgan Whitesell of Wylie East, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7(4-7), 10-8. “It took three hours but my girls pulled it out,” Anna head coach Vince Sharp said. “It was one of the best high school matches I have seen.”


In Boys Singles A, Jesus Garrido claimed a Consolation medal for the Coyotes, defeating Michael Ehler of Krum, 8-3, in finals. Andrea Alvarez took third place in Girls Singles A and in Girls Single B, Macy Davis claimed third as well, defeating Princeton’s Michelle Valverde, 6-1, 6-2. In Mixed Doubles B action, Anna’s Zackari Eade and Olivia Simmons bested Wylie East, 8-0, in the Consolation finals.
