ANNA – Anna’s ever-improving offense and scrappy defense outlasted Lindsay, 51-46, on Friday in non-district action at Anna High School. The Lady Coyotes (6-7) broke open a tight contest with a 29-10 surge over the second and third quarters then held off a furious Lindsay rally for the win. Guard Kaycee Redwine tallied 11 points to lead Anna while guard Marianna Bert chipped in eight. For the Class 2A Lady Knights, Karlye Case drained a game-high 14 points, including 7-of-7 free-throw shooting.

“The biggest thing is that we finished,” Anna head coach Justin Baldia said. “That’s something we emphasized this week - scoring. We’re finding that basketball is a lot more fun when you can score. The girls have always been unselfish and willing to move the ball – sometimes to a fault. But tonight it looked a lot better because we scored at the end of the possession. I’ll take 51 points most nights.”

“They’re a very, very good team,” Baldia said of the Lady Knights. “They’re disciplined. I think they missed two free throws all night. … I thought our girls handled it well for the majority of the night.”

After halftime, Baldia said his team focused on hitting their spots defensively and made an adjustment in playing certain passes. The result? Anna rolled to a 16-4 third quarter. “That’s great,” he said, “but it doesn’t mean anything unless we score 16. There have been games where we gave up three points [in a quarter] but we only scored four. That doesn’t really help you out any. So it’s about playing basketball on both ends of the floor.”

“I don’t feel like we played very well,” first-year Lindsay head coach Micah Murphy said. “Hats-off to Anna. They did a good job tonight. … We finally started to play our style of basketball, there in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter.” Murphy made five-player substitutions throughout the contest – and quite often. “We play a different style of basketball,” he said. “We try to run as much as we possibly can. In order to do that we have to play that way.”

Lindsay led, 9-7, midway through the first stanza when Redwine tied it up with a left-side jumper. A nice feed inside from guard Skyla Mackey to Shelby Dombrowski resulted in a foul and Dombrowski sank both shots for an 11-9 Lady Coyotes edge. Lindsay regained a 1-point advantage as the frame expired and went on to lead 14-12 in the second quarter. Anna tied it twice more – on a Shataelyn King layup then Bre Traylor’s jumper off a Mackey assist – before taking control with a 7-0 run.

Redwine started the charge with a rebound and coast-to-coast layup. King followed with a right-side jumper off another Mackey feed then, up 20-16, Dombrowski bombed a 3 from the left corner. A Howell free throw capped the surge at 23-16 with 50 seconds left in the half. Anna led, 24-18, at the break.

Bert opened the third quarter with a steal and court-length drive for a layup and, after a Lindsay turnover, Redwine’s jumper from the right sent the Lady Coyotes’ lead to 28-18. A Howell steal led to a Howell layup then, with 4:30 left in the frame, Mackey drained a left-corner 3 for a 33-18 advantage. Up 36-22, Traylor saved a ball going out of bounds and flipped it to Bert who took it all the way for 2. A pair of Traylor free throws as the quarter ended sent the lead to 40-22, Anna’s biggest lead of the night.

In the fourth, Lindsay nailed three quick buckets before Howell’s layup off a Mackey assist made it, 42-28. A big left-corner 3 from Bert send the lead to 15 before Howell’s put-back layup had the Lady Knights down, 47-30. From there, Lindsay took a 6-0 run before Dombrowski’s free throw reset the margin at 12, 48-36. With 1:42 remaining, the Lady Knights stole an inbounds pass and laid it in for a 48-40 deficit. Two crucial free throws from Mackey sent the lead back to 10 with 32 second left. Lindsay would steal another inbounds pass for two more points but with 6 seconds on the clock Bert was fouled and sank one from the line for a 51-42 lead. A Lindsay trey at the buzzer closed out the scoring.

On Dec. 11, Anna fell to Class 4A Wills Point on the road, 36-27. The Lady Tigers rallied from a three-point first-quarter deficit to lead, 21-14, at halftime. Forward Lexi Stewart posted a team-high nine points for the Lady Coyotes and Howell added eight.
