The Melissa Cardinals defeated Van Alstyne, 70-65, in non-district basketball action on Nov. 27 at Van Alstyne High School. Matt Holloway led the Cards with 16 points while teammates Hunter Sparks and Ezra Monroe added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Monroe drained 11 of 12 free throws on the night. Kenneth Castleberry Jr. and Monroe led the team in assists with five each while Avery Fuller recorded a team-high three blocks to go with his nine points. Sparks’ nine rebounds led Melissa and Castleberry added eight. Mark Fisher sank three of four shots from 3-point range.

For the Panthers, Samuel Tormos put up a game-high 32 points and Tyler Sperry tossed in seven 3-pointers to finish with 25 points. The Cards led 36-31 after one quarter and 54-45 by halftime.

Melissa’s record moved to 3-0 with the win and the Panthers’ mark fell to 1-3.
