One man was killed and another was arrested after a motorcycle race on an Amarillo street ended tragically Thursday night, according to the Amarillo Police Department.
At about 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Northeast 19th Avenue and North Manhattan Street because of a crash involving two motorcycles.
Sammy DeLeon, 45, had been traveling westbound on Northeast 19th approaching North Manhattan on a black Honda Motorcycle. Stephen Lee Philpot II, 31, was racing him westbound on Northeast 19th on a white and red Yamaha Motorcycle, APD stated. After the motorcycles collided, DeLeon was thrown from his motorcycle.
DeLeon was taken to a local area hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died, according to the police. Potter County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Richard Herman ordered an autopsy.
Philpot attempted to flee the scene but was captured. He was in possession of marijuana and THC wax, the department stated. He was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail on four charges: racing on highway causing serious bodily injury; accident involving serious bodily injury; possession of marijuana, more than four ounces but less than five pounds; and possession of a controlled substance, penalty group 2, more than four grams but less than 400 grams.
Speed and no helmet were factors in the collision, the police stated. The incident is being investigated by the APD's Traffic Investigation Squad.
