The Melissa Public Library will be spending the week of Oct. 15-21 celebrating the Friends of the Library group as part of the 12th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. The Friends of Melissa Public Library were established in 1994 and have raised funds for the library and advocated for programs and learning. Currently over 100 community members contribute annually to the Friends, and many of these contributors actively volunteer their time to assist the group with fundraising efforts that include a community garage sale, the In-n-Out Truck and a photography contest.

“The library has always played such an important role in my life and in my family’s life,” said Friends president Valerie Enoch of Melissa. “I truly enjoy being able to give something back — and being an active member of this group is fun!” Other officers of the organization are Vice-President Autumn Mahaffey from Melissa, Treasurer Jeff Boyd of Anna, and Parliamentarian Susan Rountree from Anna. Currently a secretary is being sought.

“Our library would be much poorer without the Friends,” said Melissa Library Director, Lorelei Perkins. “The funds they raise definitely put the icing on the cake. I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends.”

A few of this year’s activities/donations made possible thanks to the Friends include: a silhouette machine used for many library efforts, the 2017 Blue Bonnet Books for tweens, the fantastic December Otter program from the Texas State Aquarium, two book carts to hold all the new kid and teen materials, prizes and rewards for the Summer Reading Program — and so much more!. Please contact Valerie Enoch at to find out how to become a member of the Friends and to help with library fundraising and advocacy.
