Four candidates for Melissa City Council have filed to run for the open seat on the council in the May 6 Special Called Municipal Election.

City Secretary Linda Bannister said Craig Ackerman, Heather R. Martin, Justin Landrith and Donna West have filed to run.

The current Council Member of Place 5 Tom Stevens announced his resignation from the seat earlier this year because he plans to move outside the city limits. There is one year left in Steven’s term and the winning candidate will finish his term.

Craig Ackerman works at AT&T and moved to Melissa in 2009. He currently serves on the Melissa Planning and Zoning Committee as the vice chair.

“I feel our citizens deserve a leader that has the ability to understand current issues and the capacity to bring forward fiscally conservative ideas and policies,” Ackerman said in a press release.

Heather R. Martin works at an engineering firm in Plano and has lived in Melissa for five years. She’s a graduate of the University of North Texas in Denton.

“As a first time candidate to a political office, Heather believes her strong work ethic and background will benefit the Melissa City Council in making sound decisions toward future growth of our city,” Martin said in a press release.

Justin Landrith is a teacher at McKinney North High School and graduate of Troy University in Alabama. He moved to Melissa four years ago.

“I am running for City Council because I want to continue to serve, and I want to serve the community that has become the only true home that I have ever known,” Landrith said in a press release.

Donna West is a former business owner and currently a real estate agent with the Lori Vaden Group in Frisco. She has been a resident of Collin County for 35 years.

“She feels that because of her exposure to a large number of relocation clients moving to the DFW area, she has knowledge of what families and individuals are looking for in a community,” West said in a press release.

The Tribune will be speaking with each candidate before the upcoming election feel free to email with potential questions for the candidates.
