Local Departments Battle Hay Fire

By Ken Gaidziunas

Staff Writer

Ten Anna firefighters, with mutual assistance from the Westminster and Melissa fire departments, battled a stubborn hay fire Sunday night.

The fire, in a field along Texas 5 south of Anna and just east of County Road 423, involved at least 25 rounds of hay, Anna Assistant Fire Chief Danny Newton said.

"It was a lot of difficult work because of the thick smoke," Newton said. "We had to get two tractors to break the hay down, and the fire was still smoldering on Tuesday."

Anna police officers were on the scene throughout the night slowing traffic due to the smoke.

Newton said the fire, which did not cause any property damage, is of suspicious nature, possibly intentionally set.

"It is under investigation by the Collin County fire marshal," he said.

Newton was unable to provide any additional information due to the ongoing investigation.
