It was another busy weekend of Select baseball at the Melissa Sports Facility, May 12-13. This most recent event — the Travel Sports Baseball Texas Championship — included 27 teams from across North Texas, with ages ranging from 8U to 14U. Other cities hosting this championship tournament’s 100-plus teams were Grapevine, Colleyville, Bedford and Fort Worth.

Two teams at Melissa were coached by former Major League Baseball players: Tim Crabtree (13U Texas Stix) and Vernon Wells (13U Active Faith). Crabtree pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers from 1995 to 2001 and was a key set-up man on the Rangers’ back-to-back division title teams in 1998 and 1999. Wells, a three-time All-Star, played center field for Toronto, the LA Angels and the New York Yankees from 1999-2013.

Four tournament championships were won at Melissa on Sunday, including:

*8U Louisiana Empire of Benton, La.; 7-2 winners over HVA Storm of Lantana, Tex.

*13U AAA Texas Edge-Leffingwell of Granbury; 13-10 winners over Texas Stix-Crabtree of Grapevine

*13U Major Southlake Dragons-Wright; 9-7 winners over the Marshalls of Richardson

*14U Major Dallas Tigers-Polk; 5-3 winners over D-BAT Elite-Bonesio of North Richland Hills

These TSB events continue to be a big draw for the local area as devoted families and fans follow their teams.
