PRINCETON — The Melissa Cardinals earned a second-straight 11-4A/12-4A Area track and field championship on Thursday, April 19, at Princeton’s Jackie Hendricks Stadium. And with that title, the Cards qualified 18 athletes in 11 events for the Class 4A Region II meet at Texas A&M-Commerce, April 27-28.
“The Cardinals continued their season with a great come-from-behind team championship,” Melissa boys head coach Travis Roberson said. “They pulled away from Crandall and Kaufman late and sealed the win with a great effort in the mile [4X400-meter] relay. This was a total team effort with almost every athlete scoring points.”
Highlights for the Cards included first-place finishes by Judson Greer in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races; Kennedy Lewis taking first in the 200-meter dash; Cole McCraw claiming first in the high jump; and all three relay teams qualifying for regionals — including a first-place, new-school-record showing in the 4x200.
Greer’s times in the 1,600 and 3,200 were 4 minutes, 31.6 seconds, and 10 minutes, 2.5 seconds, respectively. Lewis ruled the 200 competition with a time of 21.75 seconds and McCraw jumped a meet-best 6 feet, 4 inches. The school-record 4X200-meter team of Jason Baker, Kennedy Lewis, Mason Enniss and Braylon Brown turned in a time of 1 minute, 29.76 seconds. The same four runners claimed second in the 4X100 with a time of 42.8 seconds. Kennedy Markray, McCraw, Jaylyn Jones and Matt Hahn are also headed to regionals with a third-place time of 3 minutes, 29.76 seconds in the 4X400.
