At the District 11-4A track and field meet, April 4-5, at Princeton’s Jackie Hendricks Stadium, the Melissa girls qualified their 4x200-meter relay team and individuals from nine other events for the area meet.

The 4x200 relay team of Natalie Courtney, Sally Clemmons, Reagan Eichel and Kaylee Lewis took first place with a time of 1 minute, 45.8 seconds. Lewis claimed first place as well in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.1 seconds and 25.61 seconds, respectively.

“Our 4x200 relay has gotten better with every meet,” Melissa head coach Clay McCarter said. “If we can get a few wrinkles ironed out, that group of kids has the ability to turn some heads as the season progresses.

“If we do what we need to do, we have a ton of potential to advance some athletes to the regional meet,” he said. “But we just have to win one race at a time. I have full confidence in the girls and I couldn’t be more proud of them up to this point in the season.”

-Lillian Rogers; second in pole vault; 8 feet
