Celina’s Lady Bobcats used the long ball to get by Melissa, 6-4, in District 11-4A action on Friday, March 16, at Celina. Two home runs and two doubles were enough, as Lady Bobcats starting pitcher Randi Dobbins and reliever Micayla Gallaway combined to scatter five hits while striking out 10 and walking three.
Alexis Pevehouse pitched a complete game for Melissa, allowing six hits while striking out eight and walking two. Kylee Brakebill and Pevehouse led the Lady Cards (9-5, 1-1) at the plate with two RBI apiece and Pevehouse posted a double.
Down, 3-1, after three innings, Celina (11-4, 1-1) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on Hannah Ubanoski’s two-run homer to center field. The Lady Cards answered with one in the fifth on Brakebill’s one-out sacrifice fly to center that scored Jaclyn Rodgers from third. The Lady Bobcats opened the bottom of the fifth with a walk then, with two outs, Gallaway’s double to left tied the contest again. The next Lady Bobcat batter singled to right and Celina led, 5-4.
In the sixth, Melissa’s Savannah Rodriquez led off with a single to center but the next three Lady Cards were retired in order. Celina plated an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth on Grace Cantu’s one-out home run to right. The Lady Cards again got the lead-off batter on base in the seventh, this time via Sally Clemmons’ single to center, but she would be stranded as a strikeout, a fly out and ground out ended the contest.
Celina held an early 1-0 lead but the Lady Cards bounced back with three runs in the third. Macy Stewart’s walk opened Melissa’s half of that frame and, after a Lady Cards strikeout, Jaclyn Rodgers also walked. That’s when Pevehouse smacked her double to center field, scoring Stewart and Rodgers for a 3-1 Melissa lead.
