The Anna Coyotes soccer team blanked Frisco Lebanon Trail, 3-0, on Monday, Feb. 5 at Van Alstyne on two goals by Jose Flores and one from Jesus Garrido. The win capped the Coyotes’ non-district slate and boosted their season record to 5-7-4.
Garrido’s goal, a 35-yarder that clipped the bottom of the crossbar, came 25 minutes into the match. “Lebanon Trail had the better of the play in the first half,” Coyotes head coach Matt Ellis said, “but we were able to take the lead into the break.”
Flores’ first goal came with 20 minutes left in the game after he picked up a loose ball following an Isaac Nino pass. Flores raced 40 yards before sending the ball over the keeper from 18 yards out. Flores struck again with six minutes remaining after a pass from Carlos Garrido. Flores dribbled around the goalkeeper before slotting home the shot into an empty net.
Phillip Henson and David Joaquin again split time in-goal for the Coyotes. Anna outshot the Trailblazers, 14-12, with a 6-5 edge in shots on-goal.
The Coyotes begin District 5-4A on Monday, Feb. 12, versus Argyle at Van Alstyne.
In Anna girls soccer action, the Lady Coyotes fell to Lebanon Trail, 4-0, on Feb. 5 at Van Alstyne and were shut-out, 3-0, by Celina in their district-opener on Feb. 9, also at Van Alstyne. The girls’ season record stands at 6-4-3.
