Melissa took down Aubrey’s Chaparrals, 62-49, on Friday, Jan. 26, at Melissa High’s Bird Cage in a game with huge playoff implications. With the victory, the 3-2 Cards moved into second place behind 5-0 Celina at the midpoint of the District 11-4A race. The first four teams advance to the playoffs.
Guard Brendon Lewis blew up for 25 points and 14 rebounds for Melissa while Cards forward Josh Wood pumped in 15 points and guard Matt Holloway added 10. Wood also posted two of Melissa’s three blocks on the night.
Aubrey led, 33-29, after two quarters but the Cards responded with a 33-16 second half.
Melissa outshot the Chaps from the field, 48 to 37 percent, and claimed victory on the boards, 28-19.
Hayden Smith led Aubrey shooters with 16 points.
