The Celina Bobcats got by Melissa, 72-69, in overtime on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in District 11-4A action at Celina High School. As reported by Cards head coach Eric Benton, Melissa was up by four with a minute left in OT when Celina’s Hayden Hollin cut the lead to 69-68 with a three-point play after being fouled while shooting. Melissa then missed the front end of a one-and-one from the line and Garrison Williams canned a runner off the glass to put the Bobcats ahead by one with 25 seconds remaining.

The Cards’ next two shot attempts wouldn’t go and the Bobcats (2-0) got to the line and added two insurance free throws. Down three, Melissa guard Matt Holloway’s desperation deep shot didn’t find home as the game ended.

Holloway led Cardinal scorers with 17 points while forward Josh Wood pumped in 14 and guard Brendon Lewis added 12. Lewis and Wood led the Cards (0-2) with eight rebounds each and guard Junior Castleberry added six more. Castleberry’s four assists and Wood’s three steals were also team-highs.

Celina outshot the Cards 52- to 40-percent from the field, but Melissa hit on a blistering 19 of 23 free throws, 83-percent, while the Bobcats connected on 21 of 31 tries. Bryson Brown posted a game-high 22 points for Celina.

Melissa had led by two with 11 seconds left in regulation after two Castleberry free throws. Brown tied it for the Bobcats at 63-all with about five seconds left. Foregoing a timeout, the Cards came right back with Holloway firing to Lewis whose contested deep shot wouldn’t find net and the game went to overtime.
