Aubrey’s Lady Chaparrals (2-1) pulled away in the third quarter to top Anna, 44-30, on Friday, Jan. 12, at Anna High School. The Lady Coyotes (0-3) kept things close in the first half, trailing 22-17 at the break.
Junior forward Hannah Howell led the Lady Coyotes with nine points and senior guard Skyla Mackey added eight. Aubrey’s Kaia Saylor, last season’s District 11-4A Newcomer of the Year, collected a game-high 16 points.
“We had goals that we set,” Anna head coach Albert Cager said, “some little things like making sure we jump-stop, making sure we’re going after offensive rebounds, making sure we’re protecting the ball. We did those things and it gave us an opportunity to be in the game at halftime. … I think Aubrey turned it up a little bit on us in the second half. Instead of us matching their intensity we went away a little bit. We have a young team. As we go further we’ll correct those mistakes. If we can limit their offensive rebounds and protect the ball, we can give a lot of teams some fits in this district.”
Cager said junior FeKyra Wells’ rebounding was a highlight for Anna. “I thought she did an excellent job of boxing — out, going after the ball and retaining the ball. She did a really good job of protecting the paint like a post player should.” Cager added, “I thought Skyla Mackey played extremely hard and [senior guard] Madison Davis gave us some really big minutes. … Those three players really brought their energy and intensity tonight.”
Anna scorers: Hannah Howell 9, Skyla Mackey 8, JaShell Evans 6, Lexi Stewart 4, Shelby Dombrowski 2, FeKyra Wells 1.
