The Class 5A Sherman Bearcats defeated Melissa, 81-62, on Friday, Dec. 15, in non-district play at Sherman High School. The Bearcats (10-5) built at 53-32 advantage by halftime and Rayvon Hester and Kemonte Dowdy went on to post 19 points each for Sherman.
Junior guard Matt Holloway tallied a team-high 15 points for the Cards (4-8), including two 3-pointers.
The Bearcats held a 48-35 shooting-percentage edge over Melissa and prevailed, 47-33, on the boards. Turnovers were near even, 23-22, in Sherman’s favor. The Cards nailed seven-of-20 3s to the Bearcats’ four-of-20.
“I think they’re really good,” Melissa head coach Eric Benton said of Sherman. “We need a little more practice time to be able to beat someone like them. But I thought we did a lot of really good things and we learned a ton. It’ll make us better for sure.”
Benton recently welcomed several members of the Cards’ state-quarterfinal playoff football team to his roster.
