Melissa’s Lady Cardinals (11-2) picked up two more wins on Day 2 of the Pottsboro basketball tournament, Friday, Dec. 1, defeating Gunter, 66-42, and Gainesville, 71-35. In their opener against Gunter, Taylor Thomas led the Lady Cards with 17 points, while Ashley Gideon added 15 points and Sally Clemmons pumped in 12. Rounding out Melissa’s double-digit scorers list versus the Class 3A Lady Tigers was Taylor Carney with 10 points.


Clemmons’ five steals led the Lady Cards and Thomas grabbed three. Top rebounders were Carney with a team-high eight, Thomas with seven and Clemmons with six. Thomas also was the team leader in assists, with four.


Melissa led Gunter, 31-20, at halftime.


Versus Class 4A Gainesville, the Lady Cards cruised to a 40-18 halftime lead and stayed in control throughout. Gideon’s 16 points were tops for Melissa, followed by Carney’s 15, Clemmons’ 14 and Thomas’ 13.


Thomas tallied a team-high four steals in the contest, with Anna Fortenberry, Natalie Conlin and Clemmons posting two each. Clemmons’ seven assists led the Lady Cards and Gideon got up for seven boards, tops on the team.
