Anna defeated District 10-4A champion Carrollton Ranchview, 12-1, in the Area round of the tennis playoffs at Allen High School on Friday, Oct. 20. The win improved the Coyotes’ team record to 8-2, doubling the school mark for wins in a season, sending the players to the playoffs’ regional-quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

“This team has worked so hard,” Anna head coach Vince Sharp said, “and now they can say they are the best team in school history. We will enjoy this win today, but then move ahead to get prepared for Frisco Lebanon Trail on Monday, (Oct. 23, at McKinney North).”

Sharp noted that his team came within a couple of points of sweeping Ranchview. Anna led, 6-1, after doubles competition, with the only defeat coming in mixed doubles.

“Ranchview had placed some of their top players in mixed doubles to try and ensure victory at that spot,” Sharp said. “It turned out to be far from a sure thing as Nalyn Koenig and Christian Sanchez fought hard, but ultimately lost, 11-13, in a third-set tiebreaker.”

In singles, Rowdy Lairson’s win for Anna brought his season record to 10-0. After Angel Dube’s opponent defaulted mid-match due to injury, the Coyotes’ advantage stood at 9-1. “At this point it was a race to see who could get the tenth win, as we were leading on all nine remaining courts,” Sharp said. “Mary Beth Geren, Hannah Heath and Ally Fudge all finished within one minute of each other to not only clinch the win, but move the final tally to 12-1.”

The remaining six contests were pulled since their results would not have affected the outcome. Coyotes were leading in all six pulled matches.
