In non-district volleyball play on Tuesday, Aug. 29, Melissa’s Lady Cardinals defeated Farmersville, 25-14, 27-29, 25-16, 25-23. Melissa (14-6) racked up 16 service aces against the Class 3A Lady Farmers, with four each from senior Brittany Melcher, junior Sophia Davis and sophomore Caroline Kasson.


Kasson led way in hitting, with 15 of the Lady Cards’ 45 kills, while senior Aubrey Grantham collected seven. Notable as “awesome” by Melissa head coach Frank DePaolo was that Grantham’s total came on only nine chances, for a .312 hitting percentage.


Defensively, libero Melcher posted a team-high 15 digs while Kasson, junior Anna Fortenberry and sophomore Brenna Sheriff tallied 13, 12 and 10, respectively. Junior Susan Blake collected two of Melissa’s three solo blocks on the night, and Kasson and senior Grace Whittington each posted two assist-blocks.


Melcher led the Lady Cards in passing with a 2.09 rating from DePaolo, while Sheriff earned a 2.0. Davis’ 26 set-assists were tops on the team and junior Charley Lane tallied 14.
