MELISSA — Round-robin 7-on-7 football matches at Melissa Independent School District Stadium ended early on Monday, June 5, due to lightning concerns from a storm advancing from the east. Only two of nine slated contests between teams from Melissa, Anna, Van Alstyne and Denison were completed before the weather moved in.

This informal league gets together at Melissa at 5 p.m. each Monday in June. No scores or results are maintained, as its purpose is largely to prepare for: A) a State-Qualifying Tournament (SQT), B) the state tournament or C) to help keep skill players sharp in the summer. A junior high league plays on Tuesdays at Melissa ISD Stadium as well.

SQTs are held at various locations across the state in May and June. Melissa attended an SQT at Wichita Falls on May 27 and qualified for the state competition. Anna will attempt to earn its state berth on June 24 at the Celina SQT. The state tournament is held June 29-July 1 at College Station. The two Divisions of 7 on 7 competition are: Class 5A-6A and TAPPS Div. I schools; and Class 4A and below and other private schools.

The Texas State 7 on 7 Association is a private organization with no ties to the UIL or the Texas High School Coaches Association. No high school coaches may participate as coaches in 7 on 7 games. The contests are played on a 45-yard field and are all-pass, one-hand touch. The quarterback has four seconds to throw the ball and no pads or helmets are worn.

The competition started in 1998, with all teams competing in the same division through 2006.
