Melissa’s Lady Cardinals swept to a perfect 9-0 record and a championship at Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s basketball team camp, June 5-7 in Durant, Oklahoma. The Lady Cards cruised past Pottsboro in the title game. Twenty-five squads from across Oklahoma and Texas competed at the event held in Bloomer Sullivan Arena on the SOSU campus.

“I was really proud of how our girls competed for three days,” Melissa head coach Heather Lane said. “Team camp can be exhausting. We played very well, even though we were missing some players like Allie Graham and Skyla Mackey. Our young kids figured out their role and made an impact. For example, Mya Ellis hit a big 3 to give us the lead for good against Pottsboro in the championship game. It was also very cool to see our seniors lead our team.”

Lane noted that UIL rules prohibit Texas coaches from coaching their teams this time of year, but Oklahoma doesn’t have this restriction.

“So our seniors had to do it all,” Lane said. “Oklahoma teams had their school coach, so it was fun to see our girls strategize and think.”
