It was a big weekend for the Melissa Cardinals at the UIL state track and field championships in Austin, May 12-13. Three team members ascended the medal stand at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the UT campus to collect a total of four Class 4A medals, including three silver and one bronze.


Senior Elijah Mackey claimed two silver medals, one in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 36.78 seconds and another in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4 minutes, 28.23 seconds.


Senior Gunnar Murphy earned the other silver with a shot-put throw of 53 feet, 4.25 inches.


Junior Cole McCraw represented Melissa on the stand with a bronze-medal high-jump leap of 6 feet, .05 inches.


The Cards’ fourth state-qualifier, freshman Ja’Bray Young, placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.8 seconds and ninth in the 200 with a time of 22.6 seconds.
