Melissa senior Priscilla Adejokun is the top Class 4A girls shot-putter in the state of Texas.
Her throw of 43 feet, 6.5 inches on Friday topped the competition at the UIL state track and field meet at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
Adejokun is only the second Melissa student-athlete to claim gold at the state meet.
Lady Cardinal seniors Karrington Lewis and Maddie Kane also represented Melissa at the state meet, with Kane finishing fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 45.03 seconds and Lewis taking eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.14 seconds.
As a team, with three athletes in three events, Melissa finished a strong 15th in the state in Class 4A.
“The word that comes to my mind, immediately, is ‘thankful,’” girls head coach Theodore Mackey III said. “Thankful for having the opportunity to take Priscilla Adejokun, Maddie Kane and Karrington Lewis to the state meet – thankful for these young ladies’ willingness to represent our community of Melissa in an excellent way – thankful for the entire team and coaching staff – thankful for our administration, board, parents and community support.”
