As a team, Melissa placed 12th and 13th, respectively, in the two-day, 16-team event. The following three teams from Region II now advance to the state tournament at Marble Falls, Texas, May 22-23: Canton, Pleasant Grove and Argyle. Individually, Bullard placed two golfers in the state tourney and Carthage placed one.

Melissa’s Tyner shines at regional golf tourney

Melissa’s Leah Tyner shot a two-day 174 to finish tied for the 12th at the girls’ Class 4A Region II tournament at Van Zandt Country Club in Canton, Texas, April 26-27. The 89-strong field featured the top golfers from Region II’s eight districts. Tyner also posted 17 pars, tied for seventh-best in the tournament. Other Lady Cardinals competing were Taylor-Ann Price (100-98 - 198), Claire Miller (100-111 - 211) and Kaimberlyn Watts (122-112 – 234).

“This team of girls has been working hard with only four players,” Melissa head coach Chris Tyner said. “They have not had the option to drop a score, so all their scores have counted all year. They recorded their two lowest team scores of the year during the regional tournament. Leah also recorded her lowest tournament scores of the year and was able to finish a very respectable T12. Congratulations on a great season and exciting regional tournament.”

As a team, the Lady Cards finished eighth in the 16-team field. Mabank, Spring Hill and Bridgeport advance to the state tournament at Marble Falls, Texas, May 15-16. Individually, Carthage, Brownsboro and Argyle each send a golfer to state.
