District 5-4A’s All-District soccer picks are out and Melissa’s district-champion squad is well represented. Lady Cardinal junior midfielder Kendall Bates was named District Co-MVP along with Abbi Neece of Argyle, and Bates’ teammate, senior forward Amanda Kocsis, was tabbed an Offensive Player of the Year with Haley Berg of Celina. Defensive Players of the Years honors went to sophomore Melissa’s Reagan Eichel and Ti Krumme of Argyle. Lady Card sophomore Brittany Morgan picked up Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
As for his team’s district-superlative picks, Melissa head coach Manuel Avila said, “I thought these girls were all very deserving. I was pleasantly surprised that Amanda got the nod, but the coaches noticed how much of an impact she made for this team once she returned (from injury). Reagan’s choice speaks to the growth of this young lady this year and acknowledges the fantastic season she had. For Brittany and Kendall, they both had great years.”
Avila himself, in his third year at the Lady Cards’ helm, was tabbed Coach of the Year for leading Melissa to another district title and a third-straight trip to the regional tournament in the playoffs.
“For myself, I am happy to receive the award,” he said. “But without the effort this team put in this year, it would not have been possible. They did a great job filling in for each other through injury, sickness and (a trip to) Europe.”
First-Team selections for the Lady Cards include junior defender Sarah Weideman, senior defender Katie Brown, junior forward Gillian Stopinski and senior midfielder Josie Monk. Second-team selectees are junior midfielder Emma Shaeffer, senior defender Abby Minchey, freshman forward Hanna Waters and junior midfielder Erin Eichel. Freshman midfielder Genevieve Stopinski and freshman defender Cambree Potts both earned Honorable Mention recognition.
“All these young ladies are very deserving,” Avila said, “and I am so proud of what they were able to accomplish this year.”
