Anna’s Lady Coyotes won the District 11-4A team tennis championship on April 3-4 at Princeton High School, led by senior Maddie Gillespie, junior Jewel Canty and sophomore Mary Beth Geren. Princeton took second place and Melissa’s Lady Cardinals finished third.

“This was the first-ever team championship for Anna,” Anna head coach Vince Sharp said. “Jewel and Mary Beth had their best performances of the year, winning the first tournament of their careers without dropping a set. It was also very cool to see Anna girls playing (each other) for the district championship in singles. It was the first time that has happened.”

Gillespie claimed the singles title, besting junior teammate Sydney Jones in the finals, 6-4, 6-1 after defeating Melissa’s Sarah Keaton, 6-0, 6-0, then topping Princeton’s Michelle Valverde, 6-3, 6-1. Jones reached the finals by stopping Pricilla Alonzo of Princeton, 6-3, 6-2, then Melissa’s Danielle Maher, 6-2, 6-1. Valverde claimed third place.

Canty and Geren won the doubles competition, topping Princeton’s Melanie Hernandez and Natalie Flores, 6-0, 6-2, then Callie Burton and Amy Aguirre of Princeton, 6-4, 7-6, in the finals. Lady Coyotes Ally Fudge and Zoe Stumbaugh defeated Melissa’s Emily Conlin and Megan O’Neal, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Burton and Aguirre, 6-3, 6-1. Conlin and O’Neal knocked off Princeton’s Hernandez and Flores, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, for third place.

On the boys’ side, Melissa’s Cardinals claimed second place behind Princeton and ahead of Anna. In singles, Cardinal Jake Fowler defeated Anna’s Jesus Garrido in the first round, 6-0, 6-2, before falling to Princeton’s top-seeded Britt Beadle, 6-1, 6-0. Beadle went on to claim the title, 7-6, 6-1, over teammate Michael Roets.
