Melissa’s Lady Cardinals claimed their ninth-straight district golf championship on April 3 at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna. Not only that, but Lady Card sophomore Leah Tyner took the individual district championship as well, with rounds of 92 and 94. Earning second and third place, respectively, were Princeton’s Laura Staley and Sarah Staley. Team-wise, Princeton’s girls placed second for the tournament with Bonham finishing third.

On the boys’ side, the Cards charged to a second-place finish, behind Celina and ahead of Aubrey, as Melissa sophomore Nathan Foster earned second-place individual honors with rounds of 86 and 89. Foster was edged out for the title by Celina’s Aristotle Terzis after a two-hole playoff. Wyatt Steele of Celina claimed third place.

“This group of athletes has put in a lot of time on the range and putting greens this year,” Melissa head coach Chris Tyner said. “Their hard work has paid off. There are no seniors on either team so we will have many more years of success. Melissa has a rich history of a successful golf program and this year proved to be no different.”

The two-day district tournament was held on successive Mondays — March 27 at The Bridges Golf Club in Gunter, then April 3 at Anna.

Melissa’s and Princeton’s girls advance to the regional tournament at Van Zandt Country Club in Canton on April 26-27, while Melissa’s and Celina’s boys earned berths in the regional tourney at the same venue, April 24-25.
