Powerlifters Priscilla Adejokun and Natalia Cox represented Melissa especially well on Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Region 6 Division II girls powerlifting meet at Anna.
Adejokun took first place in her weight class, earning her fourth-straight trip to the state powerlifting meet. She also won awards for Most Outstanding Squat, Most Outstanding Deadlift and Most Outstanding Overall Lifter, in addition to a $250 scholarship from the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association.
Adejokun also broke multiple regional records in the 259-pound weight class at this event, including in the squat (530 pounds), the bench press (260), the deadlift (510) and in overall total weight (1,300).
Cox, also headed to state, entered the meet in twelfth place in the 165-pound weight class and improved to a seventh-place finish. She ended the night with a personal-best squat (300) and a personal-best deadlift (260). Attempting to jump into fifth place, Cox fought to raise a 300-pound deadlift on her final lift and came up just short.
“It was a great night for the Melissa Lady Cardinals,” Melissa head coach Jacob Alford said. “I am proud of these two young ladies and the work they have put in this year. They have shown up at 6 a.m. every school day since December to work out and prepare to compete. They had a wonderful night and it was well deserved.”
Adejokun and Cox travel to Waco for the state meet on Friday, March 17.
