Aubrey’s Chaparrals rallied to defeat Anna, 52-48, on Friday, Jan. 13, at Aubrey High School in the district-opener for both teams. Senior Keamoni Mattocks led the Coyotes with a game-high 23 points and senior Elijah Smith pumped in 10. For Aubrey, Damond Jordan tallied a team-high 20 points, with Chase Housden right there with 19.
Anna led, 29-19 at halftime, but couldn’t hold on as the Chaps stormed back with 14-5 fourth quarter to seal the win.
Anna’s Coyotes routed the Sanger Indians, 63-26, on Monday, Jan. 9, at Sanger in the Coyotes’ final non-district tune-up. Anna’s Keamoni Mattocks led all scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers in the first quarter. Smith and senior Dillon Lewis each chipped in 10 points for the Coyotes. Jordan Williams’ nine points was tops for Sanger.
Anna (16-6) led, 25-1, at halftime after holding the Indians scoreless in the second quarter.
“The energy and the intensity were good,” said Coyotes head coach Kyle Phifer. “Every kid played, every kid scored, everybody contributed. It was a good win.” Phifer noted that Sanger, of District 9-4A, defeated Aubrey, 72-64, on Jan. 7, and also had a couple of “nice wins” at the Leonard Tournament.
Aubrey is Anna’s first district opponent.
