Cards tripped by Princeton at home

Melissa fell to Princeton, 2-0, on Friday, Jan. 13, on the pitch at Cardinal Stadium, evening their record to 1-1 on the season.

Cards ease by Class 5A Denison, 1-0

Junior Jose Malpica’s goal from just inside the penalty box with 15 minutes left to play provided the Cardinals’ winning margin in their season-opener at Denison on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Melissa head coach Kelley Pitzer noted that the combination play of midfielders sophomore Dane Hansen and junior August Greer helped create the scoring opportunity. Cardinal defenders then warded off the Yellow Jackets’ desperate attempts to tie down the stretch.

Denison dominated play in the early going with strong central-midfield play, but the match soon became back-and-forth throughout a scoreless first half.

Anna rebounds with win over Borger

The Coyotes topped Borger, 2-1, on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Denison, bouncing back from a 5-0 tournament loss to Dumas the day before. Borger took the lead 15 minutes into the match with a free header from the corner, but in the second half Anna’s Kaleb Stewart found the net to tie it with a corner-assist from Kevin Garcia.

With three minutes left, Isaac Nino booted in the eventual game-winner for Anna (4-2-1), again with a Garcia assist.

Demons shutout Coyotes at Denison

The Dumas Demons took a 5-0 win over Anna (3-2-1) on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Denison tournament.

“We did not show up to play at all, did not deserve anything more than we got,” said Coyotes head coach Matt Ellis.

Coyotes top Sherman JV in tourney play

On Thursday, Jan. 12, in their first game at the Denison tournament, Anna’s Coyotes rallied to defeat Class 5A Sherman’s JV team, 3-2. The Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match’s second minute, but a goal by senior Miguel Jaramillo 15 minutes later tied the match, with an assist by junior Jose Flores. Sherman scored again to lead, 2-1, at the half. A close-range penalty kick from junior Kevin Garcia tied it again for Anna (3-1-1), before sophomore Carlos Garrido nailed the eventual game-winner in the match’s 42nd minute, also with a Flores assist.

“It wasn’t pretty,” said Anna head coach Matt Ellis, “but the guys gutted it out and came back … to get the win.”

Coyotes blow past Faith Family

Carlos Garrido booted four goals and Garcia added two more to lead Anna (2-1-1) past Faith Family, 6-1, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Coyote Stadium. Freshman Jesus Garrido logged two assists, tops for Anna, and freshman Juan Morales and junior Kaleb Stewart collected one each.
