In the Kaufman Holiday Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 27, Anna’s Lady Coyotes narrowly lost their opener to Wills Point, 33-29, then rebounded to crush Class 6A South Garland, 49-8. The next day, in another close contest, the Lady Coyotes fell to Scurry-Rosser, 30-25.
In the Wills Point game, junior JaShell Evans led Anna with nine points, as senior Avery Oonk and sophomore Hannah Howell collected eight and seven points, respectively. The two teams battled to a 16-16 tie at halftime and were still knotted, 20-20, after three quarters. In the Lady Coyotes’ rout of South Garland, Oonk and Howell were again among the scoring leaders. Oonk rolled to double digits with a team-high 11 points and Howell tallied nine. South Garland was shutout in the first two quarters and trailed 18-0 at halftime.
In Anna’s loss to Class 3A Scurry-Rosser, Evans again led Lady Coyote scorers, this time with eight points. Lexi Stewart was next with four. The teams were tied, 2-2, after one quarter but Anna (5-12) erupted in the second stanza to lead, 14-5, at halftime. Scurry-Rosser controlled the second half, outscoring the Lady Coyotes, 25-11, for the win.
