The Melissa Lady Cardinal wrestling team took 14 wrestlers to compete in the Carrollton RL Turner Christmas Classic tournament, where 10 wrestlers won matches and five placed. As a team, the Lady Cards finished in the top 10 out of 24 schools in the 5A and 6A divisions.

Makayla Watson was the tournament champion for her respective weight class. Alyssa Rose took fourth place, and Camille Bogdan, Jessica Gonzales and Hastings Fredrick tied for fifth place in their respective weight classes.

Paige Anderson, Lilly Rogers, Benecia Byas and Kayla Stevenson obtained points for the team by way of pin.

“Makayla Watson was dominant in the tournament, capturing first place with four quick wins, two of which were under 25 seconds,” coach Rick Gagarin said. “Other wrestlers showed great improvement which allowed several pins and team points. If our young wrestlers keep improving, many could place at district in February.”

Lady Cardinal wrestling went to action next at Wylie on Saturday, Dec. 19.
