VAN ALSTYNE — It can be very difficult to get focus and determined effort out of athletic teams when their classmates have already started a holiday period. That was definitely the case at the Van Alstyne Middle School gym on Monday, Nov. 21, as both teams struggled — Anna a bit more than the Lady Panthers, as the home team prevailed in a 32-22 non-district contest.

Neither team scored in double figures in any of the four periods and Anna (0-3) had only eight points in the first half. Junior Hannah Heath dropped in a 3-point shot from the top of the arc that gave the Lady Coyotes a brief lead. After the Lady Panthers had scored seven straight points, senior Savannah Kendall scored to make it a 9-5 game at the end of the first period.

A 3-pointer from the corner by junior Taylor Medrick was the only offense generated by Anna in the second period and they trailed 17-8 at the half. Junior Jashell Evans scored a pair of buckets in the third and Heath made three of four from the free-throw line.

Van Alstyne senior Madison Reno made a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter, as the Lady Panthers (6-3) pushed their lead to 11. The Lady Coyotes scored seven points in the final frame on a pair of shots from deep, one each by Taylor and Heath. Freshman Marianna Bert made one of two from the free-throw line to close out the scoring.
