On Sept. 3, the Melissa boys cross country team opened its season with a solid showing. As the only Class 4A team in the Wylie Raider invitational, the Melissa boys lined up against 5A and 6A competitors.

When the gun sounded it was only 800 meters before Melissa captain Elijah Mackey led the pack. He led the entire race from that point and won the event with a time of 16:21. Second place was Zach Atnip from Plano Senior High, who was 10 seconds behind Mackey. Jackson Scribner finished second for the Cardinal team and 12th overall with a time of 17:16.

Once the team scores were tallied, Melissa had finished third overall behind Plano East and Plano Senior High. Mackey’s performance earned him “Performance of the Week” for the state of Texas as voted on by TexasRunning.com.

The cardinals are currently ranked fifth in state for all 4A teams. Cardinal runners will compete at the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton on Sept. 17 in the Elite Division race.
