On Sept. 6, Melissa’s Lady Cardinals rolled past Paris in four sets in non-district volleyball action. Melissa took the first set, 25-21, and dropped the second, 22-25, before closing out the match, 25-20, 25-14.
Susan Blake led the Lady Cards in kills with 16 and, with just one error, she posted a team-high .556 hitting percentage. Alli Boedeker followed Blake with 9 kills and Gill Gray collected 7. Amanda Kocsis came up with 17 digs to lead Melissa and Charley Lane tallied a team-high 34 assists. Sophia Davis was tops for Melissa in service aces with 5 and Caroline Kasson posted 4.
“Although the match was far from perfect,” said Melissa head coach Frank DePaolo, “we were able to show improvement in setting decisions and back-row attacks. I was happy with our hitting and blocking. Serve-receive and defending the outside hitter are still a work in progress.”
The squad lost in three sets to Argyle in non-district play on Friday, Sept. 9, 19-25, 8-25, 11-25.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, Melissa’s JV2 team finished third in the Aubrey Tournament with a 3-3 record. The Lady Cards’ top back row player was Mya Ellis, who led the team in passing and digs. Peyton Free collected the most kills for Melissa, and Delyn Gourley led the team in assists.
