Anna fell in it opening game but was able to win out from there in weekend play at the Harmony Tournament. After losing their first game, the Coyotes were strong in their second outing with Ty Chapman taking control at the mound and hurling a two-hit shutout, amassing 12 strikeouts.
Anna then took on Van Alstyne on Feb. 25, coming away with a 2-1 win.
Anna 2, Van Alstyne 1
Anna won a hotly contested 2-1 game in seven innings on Tuesday at Van Alstyne after the Panthers surrendered the lead in the sixth inning. Van Alstyne’s Will Jones brought the heat against Anna during his outing. The Coyotes managed just two hits off of Jones, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out five during his three innings of work.
Ty Chapman got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. He allowed one run over six innings and struck out seven, walked two and surrendered one hit.
Brady Welch took the loss for the Panthers. He lasted just two innings, walked one, struck out two, and allowed one run.
The Panthers scored their only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kyler Jay in the first inning.
The Coyotes went up for good in the sixth, scoring one run.
Anna 5, Union Grove 4
Jeremy Gee powered Anna at the plate and on the mound Saturday, willing the Coyotes to a 5-4 victory over the Union Grove Lions. Gee was hot from the plate for Anna, going 2-of-4 and scoring two runs. He singled in the first and seventh innings.
Gee handled Union Grove Lions’ lineup with ease from the rubber, racking up 11 strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks over seven innings.
The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to five lead changes in the game. The Coyotes pulled out the win thanks to a strong seventh inning. Anna went up for good on an RBI single by Clayton Morris, plating Gee.
Anna jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A double by Austin Watkins, scoring Ty Chapman, started the inning off. The Coyotes then tacked on more runs when Watkins scored on a single by Gee, who later scored on an error.
Anna scored one run in the sixth inning and followed it up with one more in the seventh. In the sixth, the Coyotes scored on a wild pitch, plating Kyle Leonard.
Union Grove Lions tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single.
Anna 15, Quitman 8
The bats were busy at Harmony ISD on Friday, and when the dust cleared the Coyotes had a 15-8 win over the Quitman Bulldogs in five innings. Hitters on both sides were strong at the plate as the teams combined for 20 hits, including three extra-base hits.
Nine runs in the first three innings helped Anna blow out the Bulldogs. An RBI single by Joseph Lopez and a two-run single by Austin Watkins during the second inning supplied the early offense for Anna.
Gee racked up two RBI on two hits for the Coyotes. He singled in the third inning and doubled in the fifth inning.
Quitman took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Anna built upon its lead with three runs in the third. Kyle Leonard kicked things off with a single, plating Gee.
The Coyotes added five more runs in the top of the fifth. An error scored Kyle for the inning’s first run.
