History was made over the Feb. 1 weekend for the Melissa Cardinals girls wrestling program at the UIL 4A Region II wrestling tournament.
It was already a strong showing for the program as three wrestlers from the Melissa squad had qualified for the regional meet and competed resulting in the team placing 13th out of 38 teams.
Bailey Church made it a historic showing, however, as she went 4-1 and medaled in third place which qualified her for the UIL 4A State Wrestling Tournament. This is the first UIL 4A state qualifier in history for the Melissa athletic program.
Ambriana Ricks did not individually place but wrestled very well, according to Melissa Coach Rick Gagarin. Kim Ortleb placed sixth with a tournament record of 3-3 and missed qualifying for the state tournament by just one spot.
The state tournament is being held Feb. 14 – 15 at the Garland ISD Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
