Anna was shocked in its district opener when Community came into town and was able to take down the Lady Coyotes on their home court. Just a few short weeks later, however, the Lady Coyotes were able to avenge that loss when they traveled to Community and got an important 51-46 win in Nevada on Jan. 21.
With the win, both teams are sitting at 2-3 and in third place in the District 12-3A standings with three games left to go in the season; both teams have to take on Melissa, Princeton and Bonham the rest of the way. A loss for Anna on Tuesday would have been devastating but with the win it is poised to clinch a playoff berth with a win against Bonham in Anna on Friday.
The Lady Coyotes will travel to Princeton Tuesday night looking to get another road district win.
Anna 51, Community 46
A see-saw battle came down to who could play hardest in the fourth quarter and keep their players from fouling out when the Anna and Community clashed on Tuesday night. Anna had 22 called fouls, had one player foul out and another three finish with four fouls each. The Lady Braves had 20 fouls called on them in the game, had one player foul out and three of their players finish with three fouls.
Needless to say, it was a long game that sounded much like a whistle factory might.
Senior standout Dei Moreno led the charge for the Lady Coyotes, finishing the game with 28 points despite being charged with her fourth foul with two minutes to go in the first half. She had 16 of the team’s 18 fourth quarter points to lead the team to the 51-46 victory.
"It was a big road win for us tonight on the back of Dei; 28 and 10 rebounds is impressive, even though she’s the focal point to stop," Anna Coach Grant Bergman said. "Tessa Hutto sparked us off the bench and JJ added nine big points. We got killed on the glass, but found a way to hold them off. I thought our base defense was effective. Very proud of the team tonight."
Anna started strong with an early basket from Mikaela Gililland to get her team on the board first. The Lady Coyotes held an 8-4 advantage after a Jaci Richardson bucket that came from a Moreno dime. Community was able to close out the opening quarter on a 9-4 run to take the lead, however.
The Lady Braves used their momentum from the first to build a five-point lead. After Moreno picked up her fourth foul it was Hutto who had all seven of her game points in the last minutes of the second quarter to help close the gap after completing a traditional three-point play.
In the third it was another story of runs as Anna built a five-point lead before Community responded with a 6-1 rally to knot the score at 35-all with just a quarter to go.
Then it was Moreno time.
Anna’s standout was 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and had an NBA 3-point shot and three field goals drop to give Anna some breathing room in its best quarter of the contest. The Lady Coyotes finished with a 9-4 run to close it out and get the win.
Other Anna scorers included: Mikaela Gilliland (6), Amber Ramos (2) and Breeanna Dilldine (1).
