The Lady Coyotes had two games over the past week, at home on Dec. 13 versus Ursuline and at Caddo Mills on Dec. 17. In both instances, the squad had to play without star senior Dei Moreno, who was out with a non-sports related surgery. Anna struggled against the prep school but was able to hold on to a lead and take down Caddo Mills.
Anna will travel to Mt. Pleasant on Friday for one last game before it takes a break for Christmas. The Lady Coyotes will get back on the court Dec. 26 in Leonard.
Anna 42, Caddo Mills 39
Playing its second consecutive game without Moreno, Anna traveled to Caddo Mills on Tuesday night for its last non-tournament game of 2013. The Lady Coyotes built a lead early and were able to hold on to it late as they won, 42-39.
"Another tense road win masks some of the hiccups," Anna Head Coach Grant Bergman said. "Scoring contributions from Tessa, Jaci, Mikaela and Bree were positive. We’re learning how to win close games; that can only benefit us come district time."
Anna trailed by three early but a driving lay-up from Breeanna Dilldine followed by a jumper by Amber Ramos pushed the Lady Coyotes ahead. Senior Tessa Hutto knocked down two from the charity stripe and then hit two jumpers to score the last six points of the quarter and help Anna go ahead 14-11 after one.
Hutto led the Lady Coyotes with 12 points – all of them coming in the first half. She had six of the team’s 14 points in the second quarter as Anna went into the locker room up 28-22 at halftime.
The Foxes were able to get back into the game in the third quarter, holding Anna to just five points in the period and taking the lead after a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter.
The teams traded points late, and it came down to the wire with Jaci Richardson scoring to put Anna up by a single point. Caddo Mills countered with a shot, and Mikaela Gililland scored with 45-seconds left to give Anna a one-point advantage.
Gililland came up big on the defensive side of the court with a game-saving block that turned into two points on the other end of the court. However, an Anna turnover with seconds left gave the Lady Foxes a chance. With three seconds left in the game after a Caddo Mills time out, the Lady Foxes inbounded the ball and the shooter hesitated before releasing the nothing-but-net 3-pointer that would have sent the game into overtime. That is, if she had released the ball a half-a-second sooner.
Despite the scare, the Lady Coyotes were able to hold on late and get the victory. Sophomores Gililland, Ramos and Richardson each had eight points in the game. Dilldine finished with six points on the night.
