Anna did itself a favor with a win on Feb. 7 against Community in a seeding game. A loss would have pitted the Lady Coyotes against an almost unstoppable Wilmer-Hutchins squad, but with the win they had an easier road – this one going through Dallas Roosevelt.
Senior and team captain Dei Moreno suited up for her third playoff game for the Lady Coyotes in the past four seasons, and it was her goal to win this one and bring a bi-district championship trophy back to Anna High School.
Unfortunately, Moreno would hardly get the chance to even compete. A knee injury six minutes into the game finished her season and high school career in Anna.
As she was being tended to, Anna Coach Grant Bergman looked at his young squad – a freshman, three sophomores and three seniors – and told them that it was up to them. They couldn’t rely on Dei tonight.
The Lady Coyotes were down 13-4 when Moreno was injured and fell behind by 11 at the end of the first quarter.
Anna fell behind by as many as 16 before Mikaela Gililland knocked down a three to start a rally. Breeanna Dilldine knocked down another three and the Lady Coyotes were on a 7-0 rally to bring the lead back to single digits. Roosevelt scored late in the first half but Anna was able to show some life despite being down 27-15.
Offensive struggles again hit the Lady Coyotes in the third, with just two points scored, those in the last minute of the period. Anna was held under 10 points in the second half as it fell 54-24 to the 11-3A runner up.
Gililland led the team with 11 points. Jaci Richardson added six, Dilldine finished the game with four, Kylie Mize finished the game with two.
Anna will be losing Moreno, Dilldine, Tessa Hutto and Mize but will be returning several young players with varsity experience. Gililland, Amber Ramos and Richardson will just be juniors – Gililland and Richardson will be in their third year on varsity – and Avery Oonk and Favor Abara will be sophomores with a year of varsity play under their belt.
