Three Melissa Lady Cardinals wrestlers advanced to the Class 4A Region II meet with third-place finishes at the District 8-4A meet over the weekend. The Melissa High School Cardinal wrestling team competed in the district meet at Prosper over the Jan. 25 weekend against Frisco High, Frisco Heritage, Frisco Centennial, Frisco Lone Star, Frisco Wakeland, Frisco Liberty, Carrollton Creekview, Carrollton Newman Smith and Prosper.

The Lady Cardinals finished fifth with three girls making it to regionals by placing third. Kim Ortleb, Ambriana Ricks and Bailey Church each advanced.

Other girls who won points for the team were Gabby Marshall, Faith Balzen and Kennedy Chapa.

Chase Simmons finished sixth out of 12 wrestlers at the district tournament with two wins and three losses, topping wrestlers from Newman Smith and Frisco, making his overall high school wrestling record 14-4.

"He did really well for his first time at the varsity level," Melissa Coach Rick Gagrin said.
